Our guest, Professor Christopher Atwood, will share basic facts about the Mongol Empire from research and answer any questions. We are also excited to welcome Ambassador Slutz, a former U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia and current president of The Mongolia Society, for opening remarks.

Professor of Mongolian Studies at University of Pennsylvania

After getting A.B. from Harvard University (1986), where he was introduced to Mongolian and Chinese studies by Joseph Fletcher and Francis W. Cleaves, Christopher Atwood spent two years in Inner Mongolia, traveling and taking classes in the Mongolian language and literature department at Höhhot’s Inner Mongolia Normal University. Prof. Atwood received his Ph.D. from Indiana University’s Central Eurasian Studies Department, where he worked with György Kara, Lynn Struve, Elliot Sperling, and Jeff Wasserstrom.

Ambassador Slutz is the president of The Mongolia Society. She was a career member of the United States Foreign Service who served as U.S. Ambassador to Burundi from November 2009 until February 2012 and as U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia from September 2003 to September 2006. She was the recipient of two U.S. Department of State Superior Honor Awards and the Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive. Ambassador Slutz retired on April 30, 2012, but continues to work part-time for the Office of the Inspector General, U.S. Department of State. She holds an MA in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii.
